Notes:
This small ‘Bachian’ type Canzonetta was the third of six pieces composed for the organ by Max Reger in 1900, and they were almost immediately published as his Opus 47.
The complete listing of these six pieces is:
Canon in E major
Gigue in D minor
Canzonetta in A minor
Scherzo in A major
Siciliano in E minor
Fuge in C minor
All creations were “dedicated to Mr. G. G. Bagster most sincerely”
Max Reger was the greatest German composer for organ since Johann Sebastian Bach. His organ music offers considerable challenges to performers and some works are even said to have been composed as ‘a challenge’. He had a great friend in the organist Karl Straube.
Notable organ works by Reger include chorale fantasias on ‘Ein’ feste Burg ist unser Gott’ and other Lutheran chorale tunes, and a ‘Fantasia and Fugue on B-A-C-H’.
The present piece has been adapted by David Johnstone for string quartet, a fairly simple task with the organ writing already in four parts. However, the playing registers have been altered for a string rendition, and bowing and other suggestions have been included in the individual parts.
