** Muriel Taylor ????-1971 England/Canada Important Activity: cellist of the Robert Masters (Piano) Quartet, professor at the Royal Academy of Music. Anecdotes: * a pupil of Herbert Walenn at the London Cello School and, later, with Feuermann in Switzerland, and Mainardi in Berlin * she was much influenced in her work by Max Rostal and Yehudi Menuhin. * Tragically she fell victim to leukaemia, dying in 1971 * first of the annual competitions in her memory took place in 1972, called the ‘Muriel Taylor Scholarship’ - about 50 young cellists have economically benefitted from this fund
** Bernhard Thieme 1854 - 1890 Germany Important Activity: Member Berlin Orchestra. Principal cello Fliegen Orchestra. Musician of Buckeburg Kapelle. Service Hofkapelle Hanover. Principal cello Baden-Baden Orchestra.
** Joseph Bonaventure Tillière 1741 — 1818 France Important Activity: Soloist to the Prince of Conti. Music/Publications: Many own original works,including 6 sonatas, and a cello method Anecdotes: * Pupil of Berteau.
** Michael Tilmouth 1930-1987 England Important Activity: musicologist, pianist, cellist, conductor and, harpsichordist. Assistant lecturer at the University of Glasgow. Became the first Tovey professor of Music at the University of Edinburgh Faculty of Music from 1971 until his death in 1987
** Auguste Tolbecque 1830 – 1919 Belgium Important Activity: Member Lamoureux Orchestra. Maurin Quintet. Société des Concerts (Paris). Then mounted his famous ‘lutherie’ in Niort. Dedication and premiere: Saint-Saens – Cello concerto No.1. Music: some original own pieces. Anecdotes: *he was a pupil of Vaslin (Paris Conservatoire). Then he lived for a period in Marseilles.
** Paul Tortelier 1914 – 1990 France Important Activity: As teenager playing in cafes and restaurants. Sub-principal cello Paris Radio Orchestra. Principal cello Monte Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra. No. 3 cello Boston Symphony Orchestra, Principal cello Prades Festival Orchestra. Professor Paris Conservatoire, Professor Folkwang Hochschule in Essen. Professor Conservatoire National de Region, Nice (France). Trio with Hubeau and Merckel. Honorary Professor of Music at the Central Conservatoire in Beijing (China). Worked in later years as a conductor. Own Music/Publications: Original own pieces, and a Cello Method (How I play, how I teach). Works inclide a D Minor solo cello Suite, a double concerto for two cellos, another for violin and cello, and sonata works. Friendships: Pau Casals Anecdotes: * pupil of Bluhm, Feuillard (Paris Conservatoire – aged 12 !), Gérard Hekking. * whilst in Monte Carlo played as soloist (in a substitution) in Strauss – Don Quixote with composer conducting. * taught at Paris Conservatoire 1956-69. * lived on an Israeli kibbutz in the mid-1950s. * always very popular in Britain , and especially so after his televised masterclasses. * his students included Arto Noras, Raphael Sommer and Jacqueline du Pré. * famous for the ‘invention’ of a bent end-pin – the ‘Tortelier’ spike. He also patented a new design of bridge.
** Arturo Toscanini 1867 – 1957 Italy Important Activity: Great Italian conductor, who began professional life as a cellist. He even played in the world premiere of Verdi’s Otello. He was one of the most acclaimed musicians of the late 19th and of the 20th century, renowned for his intensity, his perfectionism, his ear for orchestral detail and sonority, and his photographic memory. He was at various times the music director of La Scala in Milan and the New York Philharmonic. Later in his career he was appointed the first music director of the NBC Symphony Orchestra (1937–54)
** Anton Traeg (or Trag) 1818 – 1860 Austria Important Activity: Professor Prague Conservatory. Anecdotes: * Pupil of Merk.
** Jean Trickler 1750 – 1813? 1818? France (but of a German family) Important Activity: Member Dresden Royal Orchestra. Helped create the ‘Dresden Cello School’. Music/Publications: Own original works, including 7 cello concertos. Anecdotes: * Studied in Mannheim.
** Johann Sebald Triemer c.1700 – 1762 Germany (later Holland) Important Activity: Member Hamburg Theatre Orchestra. Later worked in Almaar and Amsterdam. Music/Publications: Own original works (6 sonatas published in Amsterdam) Anecdotes: * Studied cello in Weimar and Paris (and composition under Boismortier).
** Josep Trotta 1907 – 1979 Spain (Catalonia) Important Activity: Principal cello Barcelona Municipal Orchestra. Principal cello Liceo Opera Orchestra. Member Quartet of Barcelona. Anecdotes: * pupil of Soler. His playing was very influenced by Casals.
