David Johnstone redescubre una obra joven suya para flauta y cello!
Notes in English / Notas en ingles
The two short film pieces by David Johnstone, have been recuperated from having been left in the drawer for some thirty years! Originally these melodies were composed as music to a short film called “Dead Matches”, produced by Julian Roberts Productions (London) as a result of a commission by Channel 4 Television (Great Britain). And then left forgotten!
With little alteration from the original, this music is now very slightly reworked for flute and cello as a duo work (2019). It is affectionately dedicated to the Spanish ‘La Rioja’ flautist IRENE VILLAR.
There are two movements which ideally are performed with hardly a break:
I – Arabesque (free and flowing)
II – Song of the Princess (slow, ma non troppo)
However, either part may be performed separately as an individual piece without problem.
The technical requirements are not great; perfect for Grado medio (Spain) or Grades 5 – 8 (UK). As a creation by the then very young David Johnstone the harmonic implications are fairly simple to grasp too. However, both parts often overlap with one and another and imitate each other, so this might be a most useful duo for younger or amateur musicians.
