Brief Information:

The SOLOIST CADENZA to the FIRST MOVEMENT of the Haydn D Major Cello Concerto prepared by Pablo (Pau) Casals was used in conjunction with the now outdated Gevaert Edition of the work, which has been almost universally cast aside for having very substantial differences to what is considered the ‘original’ creation of Haydn.

However, the Cadenza is very useful to know, for it can still serve admirably, and given Casals stature, many a cellist used this ‘version’ throughout the twentieth century. Indeed it became a base influence for other later re-workings by younger cellists. The original copy, at least as handed to Johnstone is quite difficult to read, so Johnstone has written it out once again – again by hand, though much easier to read – for presentation here. There are a couple of alterations which Casals made which appeared in the recorded masterclass with Bonnie Hampton in 1960 (University of California, Berkeley), but these are minor points.
