BOCCHERINI/GRÜTZMACHER – Adagio from the Cello Concerto in Bb Major
In an arrangement for Four Cellos or Solo Cello accompanied by Cello Orchestra, prepared by DAVID JOHNSTONE

Notes:
Luigi Boccherini’s Cello Concerto, No. 9 in B-flat Major, G. 482, was written in either the late 1760s or early 1770s. Boccherini, a talented cellist, is thought to have composed twelve concertos for his instrument. In 1895 German cellist Friedrich Grützmacher chose this concerto to be arranged to fit the style of a Romantic virtuoso concerto, and this form is still widely heard today.
Purists will say that it bears only a tenuous resemblance to the original manuscript, especially the second movement because Grützmacher replaced the original second movement with the slow movement to the Seventh Cello Concerto (in G Major, G.480).
In Grützmacher’s hands it becomes a much richer romantic cello concerto, and it is this arrangement of the concerto which is more widely heard than the original. However, although this is a popular cello work I feel that we should correctly title it as a “Boccherini/Grützmacher” concerto out of a respect for the original. So, undoubtedly one of Boccherini’s best-known works is in fact a romantic arrangement hiding its baroque sonority, yet offering Grützmacher’s incredibly creative mind!
