Brief Information:
Written for King George I of Great Britain in 1717 and first performed by 50 musicians on a barge in the River Thames, Handel’s Water Music is a collection of three suites that exemplify Baroque orchestration. Handel’s reputation, both with the royal family and the more general public, was well increased by his contribution to the “royal cruise.” It should be said that the Hornpipe was one of the most dearly loved pieces of all, and is often played separately.
Throughout the piece the wind and brass instruments, so well suited for outdoor use, figure prominently, but given a good full sounding and energetic bow string stroke this can work amazingly well on strings!
