Notes:
An Die Musik (‘To Music’), D. 547, is an original song of Franz Schubert for voice and piano, written by with text from a poem by Franz von Schober. Written in 1817, it was only published in 1827 as Op.88 No.4 after a revision, and now carried a special dedication to piano virtuoso Albert Sowinsky. The original version was also published much later in 1895. Nowadays ‘An Die Musik’ enjoys great popularity, being one of Schubert’s best-known songs.
‘An die Musik’ was written by Schubert to express his thanks and his love for the art of music. The piece is almost like a hymn or an ode to music, thus making it ideal for a transcription for a ‘cello choir’ of eight voices. In the music Schubert chooses to convey an almost constant warm, free-flowing mood rather than the multiple moods he often employed. As a consequence, Schubert had the idea in this creation that art can transport us to a better world, that art is an incomparable refuge, and this is among the most Romantic of sentiments – therefore this is a miniature almost ahead of its time!

Dedicated to the fine Spanish cellist Fernando Arias
