Information:
TRIADIC SONOR JOURNEY is a highly-powered and tension-filled work displaying almost consistently forward looking ‘propulsion’ giving the impression of a kind of futuristic ‘sound’ journey. It is placed for the most unusual, but innovative, formation of a nonet of wind, piano and strings – flute, oboe, clarinet, piano, violin I, violin II, viola, cello and double-bass. These instruments explore many techniques of modern playing written within traditional musical notation, and all have soloist moments with opportunities to fully ‘display’. It is therefore conceived for advanced professional musicians.
Rather in the vein of Beethoven or Sibelius, the composer does not float long melodies in one instrument or even in one section; rather they are gradually coaxed out using ‘cells’ or short ‘motives’ which are juxtaposed to construct large horizontal movement. It is loosely tonal but some neo-classical and Stravinsky influence is present too. No instrument is a soloist of especial importance sitting above the others, although every part has difficult moments. In a full Cadenza for the nine the full virtuosity of all performers does shine to the fore. The even more vibrant finale at the end of the coda is a real ‘show’ of virtuosity; not as rivalry, but always as if in ‘top gear’ between colleagues and friends!
Please note – the score is laid out on A3 size sheets and so this reduction to normal A4 size with a very low level resolution does not do justice to easy lecture though it should give anyone a sufficient idea. Remember that the composition is a nonet and therefore still a chamber music work – no conductor present! – but if you prefer or need to have one and you can give proof of a confirmed performance then you may get into contact to see how we might deliver a full A3 score or a higher quality A4 sending.
Duration: 14-15 minutes (one large movement in sonata form)
