Apart from so many original virtuoso compositions from the hand of the great historical cellist David Popper, he also expanded to other fields such as writing and improvising cadenzas and arrangements for the instrument. Not all the arrangements were for very advanced cellists though; a group of arranged pieces were published by the Editorial ‘André’.

Number 23 in this list is a wonderfully romantic, at times almost dreamy, ‘lied’ originally by Franz Schubert. Neither the piano accompaniment nor the cello soloist part is especially difficult (the cello part, for example, does not venture into thumb {Q} position). However, David Johnstone recognized the wonderful beauty to cellists – both mature and younger cellists – of being supported by a full string orchestra in place of piano. Professional soloists will almost surely value this positively as a gentle ‘encore’ piece after performing a major concerto!

This present orchestration – along with the Romanze, Op.5 of the same David Popper – is dedicated to the very fine Swedish cellist and conductor Peter Schoening – a further gift for his abounding musical enthusiasm!
