Notes on the music:
‘Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich’ is a chorale cantata by Felix Mendelssohn, setting a prayer for peace by Martin Luther. Mendelssohn composed the short work in one movement for mixed choir and orchestra in 1831. It is also known in the shortened Verleih uns Frieden (English: Grant us peace).
Mendelssohn was exposed to Lutheran hymns during his studies with Carl Friedrich Zelter. He had also revived Bach’s St Matthew Passion in 1829, then thought to have been the centenary of its first performance.
He composed ‘Verleih uns Frieden’ in 1831 as one of eight chorale cantatas based on Lutheran hymns which he wrote as studies. It was probably the very best of the eight, because he later chose only ‘Verleih uns Frieden’ for publication. Originally Mendelssohn planned to use «cellos and basses», but in the final version he scored the work for a four-part choir SATB and an orchestra of two flutes, two clarinets, two bassoons, two violins, viola, two cellos and double bass. The melody (marked Andante) appears three times, with the complete text present each time. It immediately was noticed by his contemporaries: indeed, Robert Schumann wonderfully praised the music: «The small piece deserves to be world famous and will become so in the future….”
