John Philip Sousa was born on November 6th, 1854 in Washington to a Portuguese father and a mother of Bavarian origin. At the age of 7, he began his musical training with the violin, then studied harmony and composition. He also played several wind instruments.

In 1868, his father, a trombone player in the Marine Band, took him as a trainee in the orchestra where he continued his training until 1875 before taking charge from 1880 to 1892. Between these two periods, he was principal violin of the orchestra with which Jacques Offenbach made a major tour across the United States.

The Cuckoo Galop is one of his first successes, and one of his first published compositions.

These versions are written for my wonderful friends Alejandro Saul Martínez Gonzalez (cello) and Célida Viviana Borrego Morales (double bass)
