Johnstone-Music (‘documenting the cello’) was born with the idea of sharing cello music freely and immediately wherever possible. In this section there are other recommended webs where you will also find free material, or downloads at a truly reasonable price. One thing is trying to cover the obvious costs of maintaining a complex musical web site but… “Art should come before business”!
Therefore, the following are some very good webs to visit, containing interesting cello material, and with personalized attention – all very recommended by Johnstone-Music.
Cello teacher, Dragon School, Oxford, UK
Dear David, Again huge thanks for all these wonderful resources!
American/British London-based cellist
REALLY REALLY REALLY impressed with your marvellous pieces!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They ALL have something clever or beautiful in them. Of course, I’m a cellist and they’re written so well for the cello, but Simon (still Professor of Music at Goldsmiths, Univ. of London, though also Deputy Vice-chancellor) thinks they’re marvellous too (and he is NEVER easily impressed).
Swedish Solo Cellist - Profesor Royal Academy of Music, London (ex-principal with the Royal Swedish Opera, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Norrköping Orchestra)
Thank you so very much for sending me your compositions. I wish I could find titles as imaginative as yours! It's a rather unique collection you've put together: pieces of that nature are rather rare for the solo cello. Maybe less so for cello and piano, but with the pieces you've sent me you have really filled the gap! You sure know your tango! It's as easy to be swept away by your Tango Concierto as by any tango of the famous ones. And in the case of Bach, it seems that we are fighting the for the same thing: extending the repertoire beyond the Suites.

Un saludo después de visitar tu página, que es muy buena. Tu generosidad es abrumadora, más que ejemplar. Te mereces lo mejor.
North American Cellist (Florida)
I didn't want to write you until I had a chance to really sit with the music you sent me. Well this past week I did just that. I had a few of my most advanced students meet at my studio to read through your cello ensembles and they are absolutely amazing...as is all your music. I really love it. One of my students is working on the Haydn in D and I gave him your cadenza....we both love it. And your solo work is just incredible. Seriously man, I don't know why you aren't more famous. Then again, I'm sure you will be. I'm going to have some of my more advanced students play some of your music and will send you a recording as soon as they perform it. I played through all of it and there are a few that I might actually work on, either for performance or maybe even a Youtube video...not sure yet. Anyway, thank you again so much for your wonderful music.
Canadian cellist
Hi, my name is Zak Adams. I have played your Petit Tango and your Scherzo in the recital and solo music for violoncello category. I listened to your pizzicato blues and I really liked it. I was hoping to play it in a recital. Thx- Zak.

I really like your style of composition. Continue just like that, even if you go against the ‘avant-garde’ tendencies. Write, as always, for the hearts of the people; not just for the intellect. Your works with piano – duos and trios – are worthy of the attention of music lovers.

Hello David. We have never met but I just wanted to write and say how much I appreciate the music you have made available via your website. I have always enjoyed listening to the cello and after retirement decided to have a go at learning to play. I could already read music having played a little piano in my youth and fairly quickly got a repertoire together of easy first position pieces. Things get a little more complicated after that of course. There is no shortage of easy music for cello and keyboard. However, I’ve had real trouble finding a selection of worthwhile music for unaccompanied cello which is aimed at players of my level (about grade 3 at present). Your volumes of Bach inspired pieces are just what I have been looking for. Challenging enough to be stimulating but not so difficult as to seem unattainable and hence discouraging. The Bach suites themselves are on the distant horizon. {I’ve been playing for about eighteen months}. One day who knows? I can but dream. Thanks so much once again for providing entertaining, stimulating and worthwhile music to fill this gap in the repertoire. Kind regards.

Spanish cellist

How do free downloads work?
Please enjoy looking around the very large selection of music offered, and the information given for each piece or work. When you find music you want, simply click “Yes, I wish to download this music”.
You can then either continue searching or go to the Collection Point to receive the music. You can order up to ten PDFs in each session (once per day).
The very first time you receive music, you will need to register on this site with the briefest details, of course at no cost at all. Then, on subsequent visits, you simply ‘log in’.
It is hoped to launch a special viewer subscription for unlimited access in the near future.
Practising good intentions
This site includes a wealth of historical and modern documents, photos, and music — some obviously of unknown or untraceable origin. Johnstone-Music makes no intent of financial gain from sharing the material; any royalties happily belonging to the original owners.
We believe that virtually anyone would appreciate the educational and academic value of sharing, and we’re happy to credit (and thank) any name. However, please be assured that if any copyright holder were to firmly object to the inclusion of something in their domain we would promptly remove said item upon request.
Personal
David Johnstone lives near Pamplona (Navarre, Spain) with his wife Rosa and their two “Spanglish” children, close to the Atlantic Pyrenees. The nearest international airport is Bilbao.
He is interested in world affairs, politics, animal rights, and most sports (including being a lifelong suffering Reading FC fan!). Also passionate about Celtic culture and genealogy, he has traced his ‘English’ family back to 1280, although Scotland and Ireland have also shaped his background. And yes — he is half-ashamed to admit it, he loves silly jokes!
Social Work
David Johnstone supports animal rights, he is against any form of abuse towards them, and says a loud “NO” to bullfighting, foxhunting and any other animal cruelty.
TORTURE IS NOT CULTURE !
