OFFENBACH – Barcarolle, from the opera ‘The Tales of Hoffman’ – TWO CELLOS

Other Identification:
A barcarolle (from French, also barcarole; originally, Italian barcarola or barcaruola, from barca ‘boat’) is a traditional folk song sung by Venetian gondoliers, or a piece of music composed in that style. In classical music, two of the most famous barcarolles are Jacques Offenbach’s “Belle nuit, ô nuit d’amour”, from his opera The Tales of Hoffmann; and Frédéric Chopin’s Barcarolle in F-sharp major for solo piano.
The Tales of Hoffmann is based on several of Hoffmann’s Fantastic Tales. The opera’s most famous aria is the Barcarolle, also known as ‘Belle Nuit’, an operatic piece written in a moderato tempo in the style of the folk songs sung by the gondoliers of Venice, the city where the scene is set.

Approximate difficulty:
The idea of this TWO CELLO creation is to give to intermediate cellists (and even promising cellists with only a few years’ experience) a chamber music piece which does not go beyond fourth or fifth position in the first cello part, which is the famous melody line. The second cello has an accompanying arpeggio role, but one which is vital to the harmonic implications of the phrases. Rather than just a song, this becomes a concert piece for two cellos. Despite the Eb Major setting – meaning many backward extensions – it should not present too many difficulties to modest but keen musicians.
