ZABALA – Zortziko (Basque Dance) – THREE (OR FOUR) CELLOS

Other Identification:
An original Basque dance in a very unusual 5/8 time prepared for three or four cellos by David Johnstone. The music as such is divided amongst three cellos. The fourth cello takes up the rhythm of the Basque flute (Txistu) accompanying drum; this by using two alternate fingers (probably thumb and one other) to hit the wood of the cello in this original ‘pulsation’.
The composer Pedro de ZABALA Y GARAY is almost unknown today, and information on him is difficult to come by. This arrangement is by David Johnstone.
Movements or sections:
a Zortziko – a Basque dance marked ‘tempo di zortziko’ !
Instrumentation:
TRIO OF THREE CELLOS
Possible in a quartet of Cellos; however the 4th part is solely percussive effects
Another option could be with three cellos but also incorporating a small drum alongside the three melodic cello lines.

The music is in a fairly comfortable register, set in A minor. A solitary moment in 7th position from the first cello might be brought down one octave if played by elementary cellists.
