RODRIGUEZ – Tango, La Cumparsita – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
La cumparsita is a tango whose melody was created and written in early 1917 by Uruguayan musician Gerardo Matos Rodríguez. Firpo was the first to play it in public, with his orchestra, on April 19th, 1917, at the Confitería La Giralda, located in Montevideo’s Plaza Independencia. Roberto Firpo, director and pianist of the orchestra that premiered the song, added parts of his tangos “La gaucha Manuela” and “Curda completa” to Matos’ carnival march (“La cumparsita”), resulting in “La cumparsita” as it is currently known.”
It has become one of the most widely performed tangos worldwide.
Singer Carlos Gardel and renowned orchestra conductors – from Juan D’Arienzo to Osvaldo Pugliese – successfully added La cumparsita to their repertoire.
Many musical artists have performed their own versions of this tango, including:
Shakira, Julio Iglesias, Julio Sosa, Orquesta Típica Tokio, Ranko Fujisawa, Raffaella Carrà, Violentango, Desi Arnaz, Xavier Cugat, Boston Pops, Milva, Mantovani, Frank Pourcel, Nino Rota, Jinny and The Flamboyants, and many more!
