MINKUS – Fandango (from the ballet ‘Don Quijote’) – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
Ludwig Minkus – Fandango from “Don Quijote”

Don Quijote de Minkus was premiered at the Bolshoi Theater in 1869. Structured in a prologue and four acts (although in many later versions recast in three) the ballet is based, very freely, on the celebrated novel by Miguel de Cervantes, above all in the episode corresponding to Camacho’s wedding.

The Don Quijote ballet of Minkus is one of the ballet benchmarks on a universal scale, and bit by bit the work of Minkus has become one of the great reference ballets for spectators across the five continents.

The great ‘Fandango’ is one of the greatest and most exciting pieces of all the work, for its propulsion and great color of orchestration. David Johnstone’s version for 4 solo cellists has been made with “virtuosity” in mind although everything is perfectly playable! All parts share moments of prominence and projection; a work of chamber music within true symphonic planning! It is also possible to interpret it in larger groups or ensembles, taking advantage of possible divisi in certain moments, but all musicians should be of near professional standard.
