BOCCHERINI-Grutzmacher – Adagio from the Cello Concerto in Bb Major – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
The Boccherini-Grützmacher Cello Concerto in B-flat major, G. 482, is a popular Classical-era work for cello that exists in two main forms: Boccherini’s original composition from the late 1760s or early 1770s, and a significantly altered Romantic-era arrangement by the German cellist Friedrich Grützmacher published in 1895. Grützmacher’s version, which became widely known, features extensive cuts, material borrowed from other Boccherini concertos, and a replacement second movement, making it more virtuosic and suitable for Romantic-era cello playing but with only a tenuous resemblance to the original.

Grützmacher significantly modified the piece to suit the Romantic style of the time. The changes Included:
** Cuts in the outer movements.
** NOTE! – Replacement of the entire original second movement with the second movement from Boccherini’s Seventh Cello Concerto, G. 480. This has infuriated some purists, beautiful as this music is!
