BACH – Chorale Prelude ‘Mortify us by thy grace’ (from the Cantata BWV 22) – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
The cantata BWV 22 features a dramatic structure with biblical text and chorale around operatic forms of aria and recitative. The music is written for three vocal soloists, a four-part choir, oboe, strings, and continuo.
Bach composed this cantata for the last Sunday before Lent, the same Sunday he performed it again after taking up office in Leipzig.
Movements or sections:
“Mortify us by thy grace” refers to the closing chorale of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cantata BWV 22, Jesus nahm zu sich die Zwölfe (Jesus Took Twelve With Him). This four-part chorale, based on the hymn “Herr Christ, der einig Gotts Sohn” by Elisabeth Cruciger, is a distinct and memorable melody.

In the context of the hymn and the cantata’s theme of spiritual transformation, “mortify us” means to subdue or kill the sinful nature within us. “Through kindness, awake us through thy grace” signifies that this mortification and new life are a gift from God.
