BACH – Canzona, BWV 588 – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
Canzona is an instrumental form from the 16th century. The Canzona in D minor, BWV 588, is an organ work by J.S. Bach written before 1714, possibly around 1715, so the work is associated with Bach’s time in Weimar, a period when he wrote many organ works. It is a style exercise, based on the 16th-century Italian canzona genre, featuring two contrasting sections in different meters: the first in double time and the second in triple time.
Movements or sections:
The piece builds contrapuntal complexity, demonstrating Bach’s skill with techniques like sequence, chromatic answers, and increasing elaboration of a subject through various voices.
