ALBENIZ – Tango (Habanera) in two versions – FOUR CELLOS

Other Identification:
Isaac Albéniz’s Tango in D, from his 1890 piano suite España, is a famous, slow, and romantic piece written in D major. Although originally for piano, it is most known for being transcribed for classical guitar by Miguel Llobet, making it a core piece in the classical guitar repertoire. The piece evokes a sophisticated, European-style dance rather than the fiery, passionate Argentine tango.
Movements or sections:
While named “Tango,” it’s considered more of a Cuban habanera in style, contributing to the suite’s nostalgic longing for exotic locales, rather than the intense Argentine tango.
Instrumentation:
QUARTET OF FOUR CELLOS
Arrangements by David Johnstone
