BACH – Arioso (from the St. John’s Passion) – SIX CELLOS

Other Identification:
J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion (Johannes-Passion, BWV 245) is a Baroque choral work setting the crucifixion story from the Gospel of John for choir, soloists, and orchestra. Composed in 1724 for Good Friday Vespers in Leipzig, it is the earlier of Bach’s surviving Passions. The text blends biblical narrative, the poetry of Barthold Heinrich Brockes, and familiar German hymn tunes (chorales), with musical forms including recitatives, arias, ariosos, and dramatic crowd choruses (turbae). Bach revised the work several times after its initial performance, with the final version completed only in 1749.

The ‘Arioso’ is a blend of lyrical and declamatory singing.
