WAGNER – Siegfried’s Funeral March – 6 CELLOS AND 2 DOUBLE-BASSES

Other Identification:
Richard Wagner’s “Siegfried’s Funeral March” is a powerful orchestral piece from the final opera of his Ring Cycle, Götterdämmerung (Twilight of the Gods), composed between 1869 and 1874 and premiered in 1876.

The march occurs in Act Three of Götterdämmerung, after the hero Siegfried is murdered, leading to the tragic climax of the story. The music depicts the protagonist Siegfried’s death and is notable for its use of various leitmotifs (musical themes) from earlier operas, including themes associated with Siegfried, his parents, the Sword, and the curse of the Ring, creating a dark and epic sense of tragedy and culmination of the saga. The work is written for a large orchestra, including Wagner’s unique Wagner tubas and multiple harps, contributing to its immense and dramatic sound.
