SCHUMANN – Abendlied, Op.85 No.12 – FIVE CELLOS (with optional double bass part instead of Cello 5)

Other Identification:
A most wonderful romantic song by Schumann which looks ahead to the writing of Wagner. This piece was certainly a favourite of the old German cellist Hugo Becker.

Robert Schumann’s Abendlied (“Evening Song”) is a popular Romantic-era piano piece from his 12 Pieces for Four Hands, Op. 85 and has an associated German text by Gottfried Kinkel. The text depicts a tranquil evening, with the fading breeze, the quiet footsteps of angels, and the rising stars, encouraging a sense of peace and a release from worry.

The work was so popular that it was arranged for many different instruments, including three-hand piano, by other composers like Camille Saint-Saëns and Ferruccio Busoni.
