“Smile” is a song with a melody by Charlie Chaplin, first released as an instrumental theme for his 1936 film Modern Times. Lyrics and the title were added in 1954 by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons, who were inspired by Chaplin’s Tramp character and the film’s themes of hope and perseverance during hardship. The song has since become a popular and timeless standard, famously recorded by artists like Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, and Michael Jackson.
