“Après un rêve” (“After a Dream”) is one of Gabriel Fauré’s most popular melodies, originally composed for voice and piano in 1877 as the first of his Trois Mélodies. The text, from an anonymous Italian poem adapted by Romain Bussine, describes the bliss of a dream lover and the sadness upon waking, with the dreamer longing to return to the dream. The piece is known for its elegant, lyrical quality and has been arranged for many different instruments, especially notable being Pau (Pablo) Casal’s version for cello and piano.
