COPLAND – Fanfare for the Common Man – 5 CELLOS

Other Identification:
Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man is a 1942 piece for brass and percussion, commissioned by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra for World War II. Inspired by a speech from Vice President Henry A. Wallace about the “Century of the Common Man,” the work was intended to be a patriotic tribute to those serving in the war.

The piece is known for its majestic and powerful sound, building from a simple theme in the trumpets to a powerful climax involving the full ensemble. The fanfare is written with a contemporary sound, using bi-chordal harmonies and irregular rhythms, while still sounding direct and powerful.
