BEETHOVEN – Romance, Op.40, in G Major – 6 CELLOS or CELLO SOLOIST WITH CELLO ORCHESTRA (11 cellists in all)

Other Identification:
Beethoven’s Romance in G major, Op. 40, is a piece for solo violin and orchestra, composed around 1801 and published in 1803. It is one of two Romances he wrote for violin and orchestra, with the other being the Op. 50 in F major, which was actually composed earlier. The work is scored for a “classically sized” orchestra including flute, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns, and strings.

The piece opens with the solo violin alone, which was an unconventional start. It features noble melodies with virtuoso embellishments, a quality that made it popular during Beethoven’s lifetime. The structure is a simple rondo form, ABACA, with a coda – the duration is about 8 minutes.

It is always interesting and satisfying to learn of any performance by a cello soloist of this work, no matter how formal or informal it might be(!) and most especially of this version – Johnstone’s world first (probably!) arrangement for six cellos or accompanied by an orchestra of cellos. This is therefore ideal for 11 cellists (one soloist and two each ‘orchestral’ cello part).

Also – to point out that when the Beethoven Romances in F Major and/or G Major are performed with ‘normal’ orchestra but unusually featuring a cello soloist, the orchestral parts are exactly the same as in the more accustomed violin version. The orchestral parts and general score with violin soloist are already published by varying editions, so simply approach one of these publishers if you wish to go ahead and perform the work as a cello soloist with orchestra.
