HAZO, Samuel R. – Solas Ane – CHOIR OF 10 CELLOS (with optional percussion)

Other Identification:
“Solas Ane” is a concert band piece by American composer Samuel R. Hazo, a renowned composer who primarily writes for wind ensembles. The title is Gaelic for “Yesterday’s Joy” and the piece is known for its blend of Celtic-inspired melodies, featuring both lyrical woodwind solos and powerful, full-band passages with dynamic percussion.

This piece is almost a homage – the title was inspired by the immense pleasure Margene Pappas, the director of bands at Oswego High School, had in teaching her students.

Approximate difficulty:
This setting of Samuel R. Hazo’s ‘Solas Ane’ treats a large array of cellists similarly to a wind ensemble, which was the original setting. The optional percussion parts (2 players) add a great layer of depth to the arrangement and should be played if the instruments are accessible. In most cases, relatively strong cellists should even be able to play the percussion parts if they “do their homework”, so bringing in non-cellists isn’t requisite, but an option.

A conductor should be considered due to the many time and tempo changes, but strong ensembles should be able to master these transitions without a conductor, with practise.
