VERDI – Preghiera (Prayer, from Act IV of the Opera ‘Nabucco’) – 8 CELLOS

Other Identification:
“Preghiera” (prayer) is from act IV of Verdi’s opera Nabucco, where King Nabucco, who has gone mad, prays to the God of Israel for his reason to be restored. This is also called the “Dio di Giuda!” aria and is pivotal as Nabucco promises to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem and worship the God of Israel if he is cured. This prayer is answered, he regains his sanity, and he goes on to free the Israelite slaves.

The prayer is followed by “Va, pensiero,” the famous chorus of the Hebrew slaves, which reflects the opera’s themes of exile, patriotism, and longing for freedom – also found in Johnstone-Music in a version for FOUR Cellos!
Movements or sections:
The prayer’s Italian title is “Dio di Giuda!” which translates to “God of Judah!”. As Nabucco finishes his prayer, his strength and reason are restored, and he is immediately able to command his soldiers and rescue the Israelites.
Instrumentation:
OCTET OF EIGHT CELLOS
Cello 1 is the vocal line, Cellos 2 – 7 are a cello sextet, and the 8th voice is from the double bass part.
