SUPPE – Cello Overture ‘Light Cavalry’ – 12 CELLOS

The “Light Cavalry Overture” is a famous, lively orchestral piece by Austrian composer Franz von Suppé from his 1866 operetta of the same name (German: Leichte Kavallerie). Though the operetta is rarely performed today, the overture is a popular standalone concert piece known for its energetic brass fanfares, galloping cavalry theme, and dramatic shifts in mood. It is often used in films, cartoons, and advertisements for scenes involving action or military themes. Likewise it is a staple item in the repertoire of many orchestras and bands worldwide.

David Johnstone shortens the work to a more simple A – B – A form; hence his title ‘Cello Overture’ !
