PARRY, Hubert – Jerusalem (based on the Blake poem ‘And did those feet in ancient time’) – 8 CELLOS

Other Identification:
“Jerusalem” is a popular hymn by composer Sir Hubert Parry, set to William Blake’s poem “And did those feet in ancient time” in 1916. It was initially created for, and was first performed at a patriotic WWI rally in London in March 1916. However, it was quickly adopted by the women’s suffrage movement – it became an anthem for the National Federation of Women’s Institutes.

Sir Edward Elgar created the orchestral accompaniment in 1922 for the Leeds Festival.

Due to its immense popularity, it is often considered England’s “unofficial” national anthem. It is now often sung at sporting events and ceremonies, and is traditionally performed at the Last Night of the Proms. In the sporting events, mention should be made of the Commonwealth Games where ‘Team England’ adopted it as its victory anthem in 2010.
