HANDEL – Chorus ‘See, the conqu’ring hero comes’ (from the Oratorio ‘Judas Maccabaeus’) – TWO CELLOS (easy)

Other Identification:
The “Chorus from Judas Maccabaeus” refers to one of many choral pieces from George Frideric Handel’s 1747 oratorio, Judas Maccabaeus, but in particular to one of the most famous pieces of Handel: the chorus “See, the conqu’ring hero comes.” This has later been adopted as a Christian hymn tune and is also popular in Israel as a Hanukkah song.

The oratorio tells the story of the Maccabean revolt, which inspired the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, and was originally intended as a secular piece to celebrate the Duke of Cumberland’s victory at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Handel’s oratorio, with a libretto by Thomas Morell, uses the ancient Jewish struggle against Syrian oppression as a parallel to contemporary English political events. The choruses, which range from mourning to triumphant exultation, are known for their dramatic and victorious character.
