Johnstone has produced this version for cello ensemble. He transposes the music to the comfortable key of D Major, making it an ideal classroom and concert piece for cellists in their beginning years, perhaps unaccustomed to playing in ensembles.
All parts are harmonically important, and pizzicato is occasionally employed. Only the first cello part uses the 2nd, 3rd and 4th positions; the other three voices are always in first position, albeit with occasional ‘extensions’. This piece is interesting for tone production, in the imitation of deep profound male voice choirs….
