WORK, Henry Clay – Small Concert piece based on the song ‘Grandfather’s Clock’ – FOUR CELLOS (easy)

Other Identification:

“My Grandfather’s Clock” is a popular 1876 song by American composer Henry Clay Work [WRONGLY attributed to Talbot in the sheet music, apologies!], inspired by a longcase clock at an English hotel that stopped working when its owner died. The song is credited with popularizing the term “grandfather clock” for these tall clocks, replacing “longcase clock”. It tells the story of a clock that was present from the birth of a man until his death, and it stopped working forever when he died. Work, who also wrote “Marching Through Georgia”.

The origin of this name is credited by the Oxford English Dictionary for popularizing the term “grandfather clock” for longcase clocks. The earliest known recording was made in 1905 by Harry Macdonough and the Haydn Quartet. The song is now a standard in British brass bands and is popular in bluegrass music.
