FRANCK – Panis Angelicus – SOLO CELLO AND PIANO, with optional second cello

Franck’s Panis Angelicus refers to a musical composition by César Franck, based on a 13th-century hymn text by Saint Thomas Aquinas. The piece, meaning “Bread of Angels,” was originally written in 1872 for tenor, organ, harp, and cello. He later added it to his three-voice Messe Solennelle.

Franck’s original version was for tenor voice, organ, harp, and cello, and the original key is A Major.

It is a famous and frequently performed sacred work, often used at weddings and other festive events. Many acclaimed singers, including Andrea Bocelli, Luciano Pavarotti, and Renée Fleming, have performed renditions of the piece.

Movements or sections:
Despite its liturgical origins, the piece is frequently performed at secular events like weddings due to its beautiful and moving melody.
The tempo marking is ‘Poco lento’.

Personal

David Johnstone lives near Pamplona (Navarre, Spain) with his wife Rosa and their two “Spanglish” children, close to the Atlantic Pyrenees. The nearest international airport is Bilbao.

He is interested in world affairs, politics, animal rights, and most sports (including being a lifelong suffering Reading FC fan!). Also passionate about Celtic culture and genealogy, he has traced his ‘English’ family back to 1280, although Scotland and Ireland have also shaped his background. And yes — he is half-ashamed to admit it, he loves silly jokes!

Social Work

David Johnstone supports animal rights, he is against any form of abuse towards them, and says a loud “NO” to bullfighting, foxhunting and any other animal cruelty.
