IRELAND traditional – Jig ‘The Irish Washerwoman’ – STRING QUARTET

Other Identification:
“Irish Washer Woman” is a type of homage to the hard-working historical figure who washed clothes by hand, created as a very popular traditional Irish jig. Curiously though, some scholars suggest it may have English origins, perhaps derived from the tune “Dargason”.

It is a regularly heard in Irish folk music sessions and is also popular for dancing. It is featured in other musical contexts, such as in Leroy Anderson’s “Irish Suite”.

The jig is known for its upbeat tempo, often played on the fiddle, and its melody can be seen as an auditory depiction of the rhythmic scrubbing of laundry!
