“Orientale,” from César Cui’s Kaleidoscope suite (Op. 50), is a famous 19th-century miniature for violin and piano known for its oriental charm. The piece is one of 24 miniatures in the Kaleidoscope cycle, though it has become a popular encore that is widely arranged for various instruments. Originally for violin and piano, it is now frequently arranged for other instruments, with cello and piano being a very popular arrangement. The title is French, meaning “oriental” or “Eastern,” referencing a style of music inspired by the East.

The piece is short, an allegretto in \(6/8\) time, and features an “oriental” melodic and rhythmic style, often with a “tambourine rhythm” in the opening bars.

Personal

David Johnstone lives near Pamplona (Navarre, Spain) with his wife Rosa and their two “Spanglish” children, close to the Atlantic Pyrenees. The nearest international airport is Bilbao.

He is interested in world affairs, politics, animal rights, and most sports (including being a lifelong suffering Reading FC fan!). Also passionate about Celtic culture and genealogy, he has traced his ‘English’ family back to 1280, although Scotland and Ireland have also shaped his background. And yes — he is half-ashamed to admit it, he loves silly jokes!

Social Work

David Johnstone supports animal rights, he is against any form of abuse towards them, and says a loud “NO” to bullfighting, foxhunting and any other animal cruelty.
