JM – BASQUE STRING TRIOS No.4 – Mutil Dantza de Baztan – VIOLIN, VIOLA AND CELLO

Other Identification:
Four melodies from the Basque – Navarre autonomous regions, showing the unusual rhythmic cellos of Basque music, with some celtic influence clearly visible in places. These have been specially prepared by David Johnstone as small concert pieces (the set of four will probably take you around 12 minutes), and have been conceived as chamber music trios; all parts are protagonists and have melodic interest.

Please note that the Navarre and Basque influence, which extends through all three Basque provinces of Euskalherria, and Navarre, and the French Basque country – in all has a population of that of nearly Denmark!
Movements or sections:
The pieces can be played as a set or Suite or as individual numbers; the titles are:

No.1 ‘The Zortziko of Zabalza’
(an unusual Basque dance in 5/8 time):
..
No.2 ‘Nere Herriko Neskatxa Maite’ (“Querida la Muchacha de mi pueblo” / “So well loved is the girl of my village”)
– a romantic Basque language song with modern celtic influence:
..
No.3 ‘Navarra Jota-Waltz’
(the Navarre Jota has fast instrumental parts with slower sung parts; this features the outer faster sections):
..
No.4 ‘Mutil Dantza de Baztán’
(fast dance music from North Navarre, again with irregular rhythms and irregular bars of phrase patterns!)
Instrumentation: PIECE NUMBER 4 –
