RAVEL – Miniature ‘Piece en forme de Habanera’ – TRIO CLARINET, CELLO AND PIANO

Other Identification:
Maurice Ravel’s Pièce en forme de habanera is a 1907 work originally written as a vocalise for bass voice and piano, titled “Vocalise-étude en forme de Habanera”. It was commissioned by voice professor Amédée-Louis Hettich and intended as a vocalise etude to be a virtuosic exercise for singers.

It was then later transcribed for cello and piano; in fact, Ravel himself transcribed the piece, a version that retains the original’s virtuosity. The piece is now popular in many instrumental arrangements for instruments like violin, oboe, and saxophone. One of the most beautiful impressionist style miniatures ever written!
Movements or sections:
It is a short piece inspired by the slow, sensual Spanish habanera dance, featuring a characteristic rhythm and virtuosic melodic lines.
Instrumentation: TRIO OF CLARINET (in Bb), CELLO AND PIANO
Arranged by David Johnstone (1997)
The handwriting is not especially good, but should be acceptable to read.

All the music (piano score and parts) is contained in 1 PDF.
Approximate difficulty:
DIFFICULT individually, and difficult to make a seemless chamber music version – but well worth the effort!
