ELGAR – Cello Concerto in E minor, Op.85 – SOLOIST CELLO AND CELLO ORCHESTRA

Other Identification:
Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85, is a four-movement work written in 1919 following World War I. It is a reflective and elegiac piece, a departure from Elgar’s earlier grander style, and is the last major orchestral work he completed. The premiere was in London on October 27th, 1919, with Elgar conducting and Felix Salmond as the soloist, though the performance was poorly rehearsed and received a negative initial reaction.

The concerto gained immense popularity later, especially after Jacqueline du Pré’s 1965 recording, which made it a staple of the cello repertoire. The Cello Concerto is now considered one of the most important works in the solo cello repertoire.

Movements or sections:
The concerto has four movements, with a unique structure where the first two movements are connected, and the last two are also connected. The work is known for its introspective and restrained mood, often described as autumnal, and a sense of loss and reflection.
Instrumentation: CELLO ORCHESTRA (plus one cello soloist)
