HAYDN_Piatti_Johnstone – Air and Variations (Hob. VI6, mvt. 3) – SOLO CELLO OR SOLO VIOLA AND STRING ORCHESTRA

Other Identification:
This piece appeared in a volume of pieces supposedly prepared by William Henry Squire, and indeed published in 1913. But after conversing with a number of specialists musicians it now appears that this arrangement was carried out previously by the great Italian cellist Alfredo Piatti.

So, where did the original piece come from? Here!:

Haydn – Sonata No. 6 in C Major for Violin and Viola, Hob. VI:6, mvt. 3: Tempo di Menuet, Variazione

I have belief that this piece was once played a lot, but in recent decades it has half disappeared from the cellists’ repertoire. It was even recorded by Pau Casals (see below).
Movements or sections:
Consists of the theme, and four variations.
Instrumentation:
SOLO CELLO AND STRING ORCHESTRA
or
SOLO VIOLA AND STRING ORCHESTRA

At about 4 minutes duration I feel this could make a great ‘encore’ after playing a Haydn or whatever classical concerto with orchestra!
