“Autumn Song,” or “October,” is a famous solo piano piece by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky from his collection, The Seasons (Op. 37a/37b). The piece is known for its melancholic and reflective mood, evoking the imagery of a quiet, fading autumn with the “yellow leaves are flying in the wind”. It is the tenth piece in the cycle, which features twelve short character pieces. Tchaikovsky composed The Seasons in 1876 for Nikolay Matveyevich Bernard, the editor of a St. Petersburg music magazine, who commissioned him to write one piece for each month.
Movements or sections:
The piece is marked “Andante doloroso e molto cantabile,” meaning “moderately slow, sorrowful, and very song-like”. It is characterized by lyrical melancholy and gentle melodies, capturing a sense of nostalgia and quiet introspection before winter.
