SARASATE – Romanza Andaluza, Op.22 – SOLOIST CELLO or VIOLIN and STRING ORCHESTRA

Other Identification:
Pablo Sarasate’s “Romanza Andaluza,” was the first part of his Spanish Dances Op. 22, which was composed and completed in 1878 during his first concert tour of Scandinavia, and it was published that year as well. It’s known for its lyrical melody and is one of his most frequently played pieces.

The idea of the Spanish Dances came from commissions by the astute German publisher Fritz Simrock in 1877, who had recognized the potential of European folk dances, having starting a few years earlier with the Hungarian Dances by Johannes Brahms.
Movements or sections:
Sarasate composed eight pieces, published by Simrock between 1878 and 1882 in four books of two pieces each. Romanza Andaluza is therefore also known as ‘Spanish Dance No.3’.
