VILLA-LOBOS, Heitor – Bachianas Brasileiras No.1 (1932/1940) – 8 CELLOS

Other Identification:
The ‘Bachianas Brasileiras’ are a series of nine suites by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos (written between 1930-1945) that creatively blend the Baroque style of Johann Sebastian Bach with indigenous Brazilian folk music, using Bachian forms (like Preludes, Fugues) alongside Brazilian titles (like Embolada, Modinha) for various instrumental and vocal combinations.

Both works for CELLISTS are offered on Johnstone-Music from public domain documents.
Movements or sections:
BACHIANAS BRASILEIRAS No.1
The first of the Bachianas Brasileiras is dedicated to Pablo Casals, and was written for a (then) relatively new and unusual form of chamber ensemble; an octet of eight cellos. The premiere took place on 12th September 1932 in Rio de Janeiro; that performance, however, only featured two of the three movements (II and III), the “Prelúdio” (Modinha, with Brazilian love-song influences) and the “Fuga” (Conversa, referring to Brazilian street musicians routinely improvising). The “Introdução” (Embolada) is a type of restless and rhythmically charged song performed by travelling musicians in northeastern Brazil, and was only added some eight years later.
Instrumentation: AN OCTET OF EIGHT SOLO CELLOS
