The ‘Bachianas Brasileiras’ are a series of nine suites by Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos (written between 1930-1945) that creatively blend the Baroque style of Johann Sebastian Bach with indigenous Brazilian folk music, using Bachian forms (like Preludes, Fugues) alongside Brazilian titles (like Embolada, Modinha) for various instrumental and vocal combinations.

BACHIANAS BRASILEIRAS No.5 Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, by Heitor Villa-Lobos, is perhaps an even more famous piece from his series fusing Bach’s Baroque style with Brazilian folk music. In this case, the octet is expanded to include a lyrical soprano aria, singing a Cantilena and a lively Dança. It has a unique blend of classical structure and Brazilian spirit looks forward to the 21st century, and, in fact, is often performed by a soprano with a sole cello or with a guitarist, and remains a staple in the classical repertoire, celebrated for its emotional depth and distinctive sound.
