LARA, Agustin/Borràs – Chotis ‘Madrid, Madrid’ – OCTET OF 8 CELLOS

Other Identification:
Agustín Lara, a renowned Mexican composer (with one of the longest composer full names ever known: Ángel Agustín María Carlos Fausto Mariano Alfonso del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús Lara y Aguirre del Pino) immortalized Madrid with his 1946 chotis “Madrid”, a beloved tribute that serves almost as an anthem for the city. Amazingly, Lara did not even know the place himself, only imagining it when, during Bohemian nights, a friend would tell him what that city was really like!

Agustín Lara (1897 – 1970) was a Mexican composer and performer of songs and boleros. He is recognized as one of the most popular songwriters of his era. His work was widely appreciated not only in Mexico but also in Central and South America, the Caribbean and Spain. After his death, he has also been recognized in the United States, Italy, and Japan. His 1958 bolero album ‘Rosa’ has been rated as one of the top 25 albums in the history of Latin American music.

Not only for Madrid, he was also the composer of other ‘Spanish’ songs spread across the peninsula; examples such as “Valencia”, “Sevilla”, “Navarra”, “Murcia”, and “Granada” are the most recognized.
Movements or sections:
David Johnstone was inspired to make this transcription inspired by the clarinettist, musicologist and conductor Joan Borràs. This fine musician had made a lovely version of this for choir and piano, and the structure and tonality formed a close basis for the cello version, even though many details of the orchestration for cello ensemble were necessary to change.
Instrumentation: OCTET OF 8 CELLOS

This music is prepared in 3 PDFs:
[1 – General Score
[2 – Cellos 1 – 4
[3 – Cellos 5 – 8
Approximate difficulty:
The technical level may be described as only ‘medium’ although there are brief passages in thumb position. This piece may also be played by a larger cello orchestra – in this case it might be sensible to play divisi many of the double-stoppings.
Dedicatee of this presentation (if applicable):
This version is dedicated to the very fine cellist Maitane Sebastián
