JOHNSTONE – Double Concertante – SOLO VIOLIN, SOLO CELLO AND ORCHESTRA

Other Identification:
The Double Concertante of David Johnstone, is scored for solo Violin, solo Violoncello and Orchestra (strings, 2 oboes and 2 horns). It was written in 2009, taking as a base the material from the first movement of his accordion concerto. With the addition of a reflective cadenza (accompanied by the orchestral bass instrument pedal notes), this work has a duration of about 16 minutes.
Movements or sections:
Structurally the work is cast in a single movement in a precise yet ample sonata form, with a healthy and sturdy development section; and the full cadenza forming a transition during the re-exposition coming between the second subject (which appears first as a great orchestral tutti) and the first subject group, before a brief final coda.
Instrumentation:
If possible the size of the string sections should be of a minimum of 6-6-4-4-2 for the writing, whilst always tonal, is ambitious. The soloist parts shine as real soloist lines, frequently virtuosic, but always bound by the structural sense of the composition. The technical demands of the writing for the soloists are probably on a par with that of the Brahms Double concerto.
Within the orchestra, the first and second violins have substantial activity, the oboes and horns moderate activity, and violas, cellos and basses rather more comfortable parts. However, it should be noted that all individual string parts are perfectly programmable for all professional orchestras, most college or conservatoire orchestras, and many stable and solid amateur formations. The more competent the oboe and horn players the better, for they have many penetrating lines.
It is really only a question of finding good violin and cello soloists who can ‘click’ together !
Approximate difficulty:
Soloists – Very difficult
Orchestral instruments – moderate
