BANTOCK – Witches Frolic – 3 BASS INSTRUMENTS [3 cellos, 3 Bassoons or 3 Double Basses]

Other Identification:
Granville Bantock, lived from 1868 to 1946), was an English composer known especially for his large-scale choral and orchestral works. He was active as a conductor, founded and edited the New Quarterly Music Review (1893–96), and succeeded Sir Edward Elgar as professor of music at the University of Birmingham (1907–34). Most of his orchestral works are programme music in which Asian and Celtic themes frequently recur. He also wrote several solo works for cello and orchestra (or piano reduction).
The Witches Folly was probably composed directly after the close of World War II.
Movements or sections:
The Witches Folly is in ternary form; the outer sections vigorous, whilst the central section is somewhat more lyrical.
The score , and each individual part copied out by David Johnstone, are offered in 1 PDF.
Instrumentation:
Curiously, THREE bass clef instruments; cellos, bassoons or double basses. There does not appear to be any indication that the forces can be mixed!
When played by cellos or double basses feel free to change bow more often (often one bow per bar; bassoonists will find the given phrasing comfortable enough.
Approximate difficulty:
Medium to difficult
