This work is a reworking – and definite improvement – on the original composition Violin Company which was written in 2001 for the very unusual combination of an orchestra comprising solely the upper strings. It is a soft ‘pop-classic’ piece in the form of an instrumental song. The orchestra – without cellos or double basses – produces a constantly lyrical sound in which all instruments take turns with melodic importance, but the violas and third violins often have the vocal harmonic accompaniment.
It can work equally well played by 8 soloists or by an entire orchestra of upper strings, in which case the violins have to divide up into three principal sections and not the normal two!

Personal

David Johnstone lives near Pamplona (Navarre, Spain) with his wife Rosa and their two “Spanglish” children, close to the Atlantic Pyrenees. The nearest international airport is Bilbao.

He is interested in world affairs, politics, animal rights, and most sports (including being a lifelong suffering Reading FC fan!). Also passionate about Celtic culture and genealogy, he has traced his ‘English’ family back to 1280, although Scotland and Ireland have also shaped his background. And yes — he is half-ashamed to admit it, he loves silly jokes!

Social Work

David Johnstone supports animal rights, he is against any form of abuse towards them, and says a loud “NO” to bullfighting, foxhunting and any other animal cruelty.
