This piece started life with the hope of my creating a short miniature for a friend, but as inspiration grew this composition has finally become almost a brief Upper String Sinfonia. The aim has been to try to produce a symphonic piece which is neither specifically ‘classical’ nor ‘pop’, with prominent melodic and rhythmic material for all eight voices.

Duration: almost 5 minutes.

Approximate difficulty:
Relatively comfortably playable by students and adult amateurs (of course, that is not to say that the work wouldn’t benefit from professional performer care!). So, the left-hand positions in either version are only of moderate difficulty. The musical content may well test ensembles, but the good news is that it will seem to be a more difficult work to the listening public than it really is!

Personal

David Johnstone lives near Pamplona (Navarre, Spain) with his wife Rosa and their two “Spanglish” children, close to the Atlantic Pyrenees. The nearest international airport is Bilbao.

He is interested in world affairs, politics, animal rights, and most sports (including being a lifelong suffering Reading FC fan!). Also passionate about Celtic culture and genealogy, he has traced his ‘English’ family back to 1280, although Scotland and Ireland have also shaped his background. And yes — he is half-ashamed to admit it, he loves silly jokes!

Social Work

David Johnstone supports animal rights, he is against any form of abuse towards them, and says a loud “NO” to bullfighting, foxhunting and any other animal cruelty.
